In addition to publishing seven daily headline indices comprised of more than 130 individual assessments, the Baltic Exchange also produces FFA forward curves for all listed products, options' volatilies and volume data.

 

Additional products include the Baltic Sale and Purchase Assessments (BSPA), the Baltic Ship Recycling Assessments (BRSA) and the Baltic Cost of Operating Index (BOPEX).

Air

The Baltic Exchange Airfreight Index (BAI) – powered by TAC data – reflects the price per kilogram of general cargo flown on 17 key tradelanes, from origin airport to destination region.

General cargo includes high value goods, such as electronics, jewellery and pharmaceuticals. Transport by air is critical for serving those markets that demand speed and reliability for the transport of goods. Cargo can either be transported on dedicated commercial air freighters or in the belly of passenger planes.

BAI

The Baltic Air Freight Index reflects transacted rates from key hubs: London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Chicago, Shanghai and Singapore to the main import regions globally.

The indices include six outbound indices and 17 individual destination baskets and are priced in US$/kg.

Shipping Type

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is the successor to the Baltic Freight Index (BFI) and came into operation on 1 November 1999. Since 1 March 2018, the index is a weighted average of the Capesize 40pct, Panamax 30pct and Supramax 30pct Timecharter Averages which is then multiplied by a multiplier of 0.1.

Additionally the Baltic also publishes a Handysize index which is not included in the BDI calculation.

BCI

Sector

Capesize vessels are large sized gearless dry bulk carriers. They typically range between 130,000 – 210,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT). Cargoes for Capesize vessels are limited to iron ore, coal and bauxite while port infrastructure requires ample draft and strength to hold the larger vessels. Capesize vessels have historically been restricted from passing through major canals due to their size, forcing the vessels to transit via the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn, hence the  name "Capesize".

Sector

Supramax are typically 52,000-60,000 tonnes deadweight - although larger vessels are built that are usually termed "Ultramax".  Supramax vessels have five cargo holds (which can carry different types of cargo) and have cranes fitted that makes them suitable for ports with limited infrastructure.  They carry a wide range of dry bulk cargo including different types of ore, cement, phosphate, steel products, fertiliser and grain.

Panamax and New Panamax (or Neopanamax) are terms for the size limits for ships travelling through the Panama Canal.  A Panamax cargo ship would typically have a deadweight of 65,000–80,000 tonnes, although larger ships are built that fall under this definition.  Typical cargoes include bulk commodities such as iron ore, coal and grains.

Baltic LNG vessel is based on the following specification 91,500 mt dwt TFDE propulsion. 160,000 cbm capacity. 17 knots on 100mt marine fuel or 210cbm LNG laden.  17knts on 95mt marine fuel or 16knts on 190cbm LNG ballast, 0.1% boil off. Port consumption idle 20mt marine fuel or 42cbm LNG per day and consumption working 40mt marine fuel or 85cbm LNG per day. Max age 20 yrs.

Baltic Chemical assessments are for the parcel transport of "easy chemical" products such as methanol, toluene, biofuels, fertilizers, lube oils, solvents, and motor fuel blending components. Cargoes are generally smaller than the full ship's capacity and often there are multiple charterers on each voyage, while the vessels themselves are capable of carrying multiple grades of product with sophisticated cargo segregation systems.
