The Baltic has a long running affiliation with the Salcombe Lifeboat Station and members may be interested in a recently published book by Roger Barrett examining the tragic events of 1916 when 13 of the crew of the Salcombe lifeboat William and Emma drowned. Returning from a fruitless mission near Prawle Point, the lifeboat capsized in near hurricane force winds as it attempted to re-cross the infamous Bar and reach the safety of Salcombe harbour. Of her 15-man crew only two survived. The loss was one of the worst disasters in the history of the RNLI and had a devastating impact on the town.
