Goddess Britannia from the old Baltic Exchange building

Parts of the facade of the old Baltic Exchange, damaged by the 1992 IRA attack, are now on display at the Museum of Estonian Architecture at an exhibtion which runs until 5 June in Tallinn.

Since the purchase of much of the salvage items by a group of Estonian business people nearly ten years ago, a series of hitherto unsuccessful efforts have been made to combine its facade with several new real estate developments. Many of the salvaged items including panelling, stairs and marble columns are still languishing in containers in the Port of Paldiski.

Face-to-Face, the story of the Baltic Exchange is, according to its curators, an exhibition that is designed to examine questions surrounding a building that loses its original site and how “connections with a new environment should be created.”
