Members will learn with deep regret of the death of Peter Kitching last night (21 May).

He was first elected a Member of the Baltic in 1961 representing Simpson Spence Young Ltd, through to 2003 when he became a Retired Member.

Speaking on his passing, Mark Richardson, Chairman of Simpson Spence Young, said:

“Peter’s leadership, wisdom and passion helped steer us through the many ups and downs of the shipping market, and as a highly regarded shipbroker and former Chairman of the Baltic Exchange, he will be sorely missed by his many friends and former colleagues throughout the industry and across the world. We send our heartfelt condolences to the Kitching family at this very sad time.”

Mr Kitching was elected to the Baltic Board of Directors in 1995, and served as Chairman between 2001-2003.

Mark Jackson, CEO of the Baltic Exchange added:

“Everyone associated with the Baltic is extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our former Chairman, Peter Kitching. All those who knew Peter well would agree that he was not only an excellent S&P broker, but also a true gentleman. Peter will be greatly missed and remembered for his leadership, knowledge and passion for shipping.”
