Remembering Anthony F Klima

By Denis Petropoulos (Chairman Baltic Exchange Council)
Anthony F Klima, passed away 14 January 2021. Known to all as Tony, Klima was one exceptional tanker broker. He became head of Clarksons Tankers in 1976, and then their chairman in 1986 until his retirement in 1992. He joined Clarksons from Esso Petroleum in 1956, creating Esso’s relationship with Petrobras, Brazil's national oil company, that continues today.
Through his honed negotiating skills and charm, he executed many large tanker and LNG chartering projects between some of the most difficult customers.
Both a county squash and tennis player, on retirement Klima joined the seniors professional tennis circuit and in 1999 was world ranked 14. He was my boss for eight years in which I learned the importance of good manners, graciousness and humility in dealing with global clients - and colleagues alike - and particularly encouraging junior staff (together we were runners up in the Fehr Cup 1982!).
His children Jane and David would have been very proud of his life achievements.
