Wednesday 22nd February saw 35 attending our latest Wine Tasting Event which was held in the City’s prestigious Watermen’s Hall with the evening’s wine subject being The Languedoc-Roussillon which David Hughes described as ‘France’s last wine frontier’.

This previously much maligned region has, over the past 30 years undergone a wine revolution with a blending of the past and the present - the latter giving force to the statement that no other region of France has more vineyard under organic or biodynamic management.

We startrd in the past, tasting and learning that our reception “Fizz”: Blanquette de Limoux is recognised as the world’s first sparkling wine created, whether by accident or otherwise in 1531 by the monks at the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire.

The tasting then took us to enjoy six wines from five further Appellations of the region the wines made with white, rosé and red varieties new to many of us attendees such as: Mauzac, Bourbelenc, Grenache Gris, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and others.

With cheese and cold meat platters through the tasting and some hot food and a glass of supper wine at the end, together with historical and interesting snippets dotted here and there by David, made the evening another great success.

Our Wine Society plans its next event for Wednesday 14th June where we’ll inject some Italian sunshine into the evening as David takes through a range of Italian wines with a difference as they will be ‘Off the Beaten Track’ - so look out for notification and do book early.
