The recent International Maritime Economy Conference (IMEC), held in Algiers, Algeria, in the beginning of November, was yet another event this year that looked at the challenges and opportunities for the maritime sector. The event was once again jointly held by World Trade Center Algiers and Global Trade Support.

The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Navigating into the Future: Building the Maritime Sector of Tomorrow’ and Baltic Exchange was thrilled to be a part of the event as it showcased how its data and services are helping the shipping community to navigate the disruption it is currently facing.

Stephen Aitchison, Senior Freight Market Assessor, was in Algiers to speak to a room full of eager and interested conference delegates about how Baltic Exchange is leading the production and validation of indices for dry, liquid, gas and FFA segments, as well as other areas where Baltic Exchange can offer value to shipping operations. This includes the development of carbon emission calculators and energy efficiency indicators, with a particular focus on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).

You can watch Stephen's full speech here.

The event also included a number of speakers from across the maritime sector and regional governments, followed by an excellent networking session that enabled participants to learn about solutions to some of maritime’s biggest puzzles.

On behalf of Baltic Exchange, we would like to thank the team at IMEC for allowing us to be a part of this excellent event and look forward to more engagement with participants across the maritime space on issues shaping the future of shipping, sustainability and technological innovation soon.
