The 2024 season was a memorable chapter for BEGS, filled with victories, near-misses, and moments that exemplified the camaraderie and spirit of the society. Highlights included the historic three-day Cardiff Exchange, praised for its flexibility, allowing players to participate without committing to the entire weekend. Trevor Marsh led the team to a rare and celebrated victory over Lloyds, ending a long losing streak. The Summer Meeting at Thorpeness, despite challenging weather, was another standout event.

However, the season also brought moments of reflection. Andy Powell, a cherished member known for his humor and spirit, sadly passed away two weeks after being unable to attend the Summer Meeting. In his honour, BEGS commissioned the Andy Powell Goblets, which will be awarded annually at the Summer Meeting’s Sunday greensomes, a lasting tribute to his legacy and love for the society.

This year’s captain, Trevor Marsh, brought energy and dedication to his role. He not only competed in as many matches as possible but also actively encouraged new players to join. His leadership inspired the team and set a positive tone for the season, ensuring BEGS continued to thrive both on and off the course.

As always, organising the BEGS calendar comes with challenges, from demanding work schedules and family commitments to rising costs and logistical issues. The committee remains committed to addressing these concerns and welcomes feedback from members here. Inclusivity remains a key focus, with the society eager to welcome women golfers and ensure all participants, regardless of experience or gender, feel warmly encouraged to join.

Looking ahead, the 2025 season promises excitement, with the 100th Cardiff Exchange set to take place at Royal Porthcawl, marking a historic milestone. Incoming captain Mark Ravenscroft will lead the charge, supported by BEGS’ tireless match managers. Players are encouraged to check the website for updates and register early to help continue the society’s tradition of spirited competition and fellowship.

BEGS extends heartfelt gratitude to Trevor Marsh for his inspiring leadership and to all members who contributed to another successful season. The society also takes a moment to honour Andy Powell, whose humor, kindness, and love for golf left an indelible mark on everyone he met. His memory will continue to inspire BEGS in the years ahead. Here’s to 2025 - new challenges, fresh faces, and a fantastic year of golf!
