By Will Bowden, Baltic Exchange Cricket Club Captain

The date was the 20th of June, the sun was shining and the start of the British Summer arrived. A sense of nervous anticipation was spreading around Shenfield Cricket Club ahead of the fixture.

Pastries and coffee lined the table inside the cricket club while captain Will Bowden walked out to the toss with the Lloyds captain Angus Stewart. The opposition won the toss and elected to put the Baltic Exchange Cricket Club into bat.

Our team looked as followed for this edition of this historic matchup:

1. Bowden (Sterling)

2. Harris (EA Gibson)

3. Symes (Clarksons)

4. Roberts (Hartland)

5. Trivedi (Poten & Partners)

6. Regan (AM Nomikos)

7. Roberts (EA Gibson)

8. Hockless (Fearnleys)

9. Seb Norris (Looking for Shipping Opportunities)

10. Murphy (WK)

11. Baker (Clarksons)

The Baltic Exchange managed to put on 167 from their 30 overs. A score that we felt at the time was around 30 short of where we needed to be. The innings had plenty of beautiful shots and plenty of good starts but no one was able to turn their good start into a mammoth score. Andy Roberts was the pick of the batsmen scoring an impressive 44 from 41 deliveries. Barney Baker hit the shot of the day with a fantastic drive off the first ball after tea.

Teas followed with an exquisite spread put on by the hosts Shenfield CC. There was an assortment of sandwiches, maple syrup glazed sausages, homemade lemon drizzle, strawberry flan and fruit skewers to name just a selection of the highlights. Just enough to make the Baltic forget that they were 30 runs short of a “par” total.

Lloyds of London started incredibly quickly scoring 100 from their first 10 overs for the loss of just 2 wickets. A resurgence from the Baltic bowlers pegged the Lloyds team back to 101-4. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough and the Lloyds middle order batsmen were able to bring the victory home for the Lloyds side.
