Baltic Exchange Golfing Society concludes 2024 season with Grand Finale

The Baltic Exchange Golfing Society (BEGS) wrapped up its 2024 season with a memorable Grand Finale at Purley Downs Golf Club on 4 November. The event saw 21 golfers enjoying a crisp autumn day complemented by bursts of sunshine that highlighted the beauty of the chalk downland course.
The course's immaculate condition exceeded seasonal expectations and the striking views of East Croydon and the Whitgift Centre provided a fitting backdrop. The occasional sound of sirens added a reminder of the urban surroundings near Crystal Palace FC's catchment area. After fuelling up on the traditional bacon roll and coffee, participants took to the greens, praising the speed and maintenance of the putting surfaces.
The day featured a mix of new faces and seasoned members, blending professional networking with camaraderie. Nigel Whaler emerged victorious, securing the Purley King Trophy with 36 points, a score usually insufficient for a BEGS win but enough this time to take home the title. Alongside the trophy, Whaler received an engraved keepsake pint glass generously sponsored by Mitsui E&S. Runners-up Mark Ravenscroft and Toshiyuki Tokuda completed the podium.
Special prizes for driving length and accuracy on the greens went to Jon Potter, Josh Swallow and Les Hayes, recognising their impressive performances. A hearty lunch of ham, egg and chips rounded off the event, accompanied by light-hearted tales of triumphs and mishaps on the course.
In true BEGS spirit, the day wasn't without its humorous moments. One veteran member faced a double dose of misfortune, first being struck by a partner's errant golf ball and later losing control of his electric trolley. The ensuing chase ended dramatically with both golfer and trolley colliding with a tree, providing a story that will no doubt be retold in future gatherings.
The BEGS Grand Finale at Purley Downs marked a fitting end to the 2024 season, blending competition, laughter and camaraderie in equal measure.
