South triumph in 2025 Sandwich Challenge

The annual Sandwich Challenge once again delivered a weekend of fierce competition, camaraderie, and unpredictable weather as 28 players took to the fairways in the latest edition of this growing event. Organised with precision and patience by Chris Cox, the tournament has expanded significantly from its humble beginnings with just 10 players four years ago.
Despite a last-minute dropout from defending champion Phil McDonnell due to car troubles (along with the missing grand trophy), the tournament proceeded under dry but chilly conditions. A delayed Sunday tee time, caused by freezing temperatures, set the tone for a challenging first round where visibility was hampered by the low winter sun.

The North vs. South rivalry was in full swing as teams, led by captains Peter Hirons (North) and Trevor Marsh (South), battled for early dominance. The first round saw strong performances from the South, particularly from Trevor Marsh and Stuart Wheeler, whose match ended in a draw. The North fought back with skipper Peter Hirons securing a crucial win singlehandedly, while the South gained the upper hand through a series of tight matches. By the end of the day, the South held a commanding 4½ to 2½ lead.
After an intense day of play, competitors gathered for an evening of well-earned relaxation, a hearty meal, and a few mysteries - most notably, the unsolved case of Paul Evans’ missing fish and chips. The evening also featured an impromptu Scottish tribute to the chocolate fondant pudding, delivered with flair by Jim Stewart.
A frosty and foggy start on Monday delayed tee times once again, but players eventually took to the Dunes and Himalayas combination course. The South continued their dominance, with Jonathan Bond producing one of his best rounds to secure a 4&2 victory. Despite spirited efforts from the North, including a highlight par save by James Greenley and a Blitzkrieg-style buggy performance from his team, the South sealed the championship with a decisive 9½ to 4½ victory.
